Importing a refrigerated truck into Kenya: PVoC, right-hand drive, and age
Kenya requires three checks that shape the order before a supplier can even quote properly: the vehicle must be right-hand drive, the shipment must pass pre-export verification of conformity (PVoC) before it leaves the country of supply, and imported used vehicles are subject to an age limit. A left-hand-drive unit built for West Africa is unsellable in Mombasa; a shipment that arrives without a valid certificate of roadworthiness conformity is held. Each requirement is met at a different stage, which is why the sequence should be agreed with a Kenyan clearing agent at the quotation stage rather than at the port.
The three gates
| Gate | What is checked | Where it is satisfied | Consequence of getting it wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
| Right-hand drive | Steering position and, for commercial vehicles, door configuration | At the factory, on the order | Vehicle cannot be registered; resale value collapses |
| Pre-export verification of conformity | Product conformity to the applicable standard, inspected in the country of supply | At the factory, before shipment, through an accredited inspection body | Shipment held or rejected at destination |
| Age limit for used vehicles | Year of first registration against the current limit | At the order stage — before paying a deposit | Import refused; the unit is stranded |
New vehicles avoid the age question entirely, which is one reason a new unit priced above a used one is often the cheaper landed decision for Kenya. Rates and limits are revised periodically, so confirm the current figure with your clearing agent rather than relying on a figure quoted in a supplier’s brochure — including this page.
The sourcing routes for right-hand drive units are ranked in RHD refrigerated trucks from China.
What “conformity” means for a refrigerated truck
Conformity assessment looks at the vehicle as a product: identity, specification, safety items and the documents that support them. For a refrigerated unit, the inspection normally extends to the refrigeration machine as a separate assembly with its own identity. The practical preparation is the same list that serves a pre-shipment inspection: chassis VIN plate, body identification, refrigeration unit nameplate and serial, and a document set where the invoice, packing list and certificate of origin describe the same thing.
Right-hand drive: what actually changes in the build
RHD is not a mirrored dashboard. On a light-duty refrigerated chassis it changes the steering gear, the pedal box, the wiring harness routing, the wiper direction, and — on some chassis — the position of the power take-off and the air-conditioning compressor, which then affects where the refrigeration unit’s lines can be routed. On body-on-chassis work it can also change which side the body door is hinged, because the operator steps out on the left. A supplier who offers “RHD available” without asking about door side and PTO position is offering a configuration, not a specification.
Document set for Mombasa or Nairobi
The usual export set applies: bill of lading, commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, and the conformity certificate issued under the PVoC route. Add the chassis certificate of conformity from the upstream chassis manufacturer, which Kenyan registration typically expects. The invoice should carry the announced model code and the emission standard, because those two lines are what the conformity documents are checked against. If the shipment is a body or panel kit rather than a complete vehicle, confirm with your agent whether the conformity route differs — it usually does.
What we need from you to quote correctly
Destination city, right-hand drive confirmed in writing, whether the unit will be registered as new, and the intended cargo temperature. We build on RHD chassis where the chassis supplier offers it, and we state the drive configuration on the proforma invoice so that the conformity body and the clearing agent read the same specification. If a requested chassis is not available in RHD, we will say so rather than substitute quietly — that substitution is the one that cannot be fixed at the port.
